Multiple Sclerosis Care in Winnipeg
Energy Managed. Independence Preserved.
Multiple sclerosis is unpredictable — relapsing-remitting patterns, progressive decline, good days followed by crashes. Care has to be flexible, fatigue-aware, and respectful of the cognitive and emotional toll the disease takes. Our nurse-led team supports MS clients across all types and stages, coordinating with the HSC MS Clinic and the MS Society of Manitoba to provide the practical daily help that keeps independence intact.

Our Approach
Fatigue-First Planning
MS fatigue is not ordinary tiredness — it is neurological and debilitating. Our care plans prioritise energy conservation, rest scheduling, and support during high-fatigue windows.
Relapse Recovery Support
During flares, clients often need dramatically more help for days or weeks — then scale back. We flex hours up and down without re-contracting.
Mobility & Balance
Safe transfers, gait support, and fall prevention adapted to each client's specific weakness pattern — MS rarely affects the body symmetrically.
Heat Awareness
Uhthoff's phenomenon means heat worsens MS symptoms. We plan around overheating risks — cool showers, climate control, avoiding hot summer afternoons.
Cognitive Support
MS cognitive impairment (memory, processing speed, executive function) is common and under-recognised. We adapt communication and routines accordingly.

What Your Family Gains
Energy preserved
Tasks done by caregivers mean clients keep their limited energy for what matters to them.
Relapses recovered from
Intensive support during flares — then scaling back — prevents permanent function loss from overexertion.
Falls prevented
MS gait is unpredictable; trained caregivers anticipate weakness patterns and transfer safely.
Independence kept
Help with tasks that drain, support for tasks that matter — not wholesale dependence.
Multiple Sclerosis Care in Winnipeg
Manitoba has one of the highest MS prevalence rates in the world — roughly 1 in every 385 Manitobans has MS, well above the national average. The MS Clinic at Health Sciences Centre (700 Elgin Ave) is the only MS-dedicated clinic in Manitoba and the provincial hub for diagnosis, disease-modifying therapy management, and relapse treatment. The MS Society of Canada Manitoba Division on Buffalo Place provides peer support, counselling, equipment loans, and educational resources.
Day-to-day MS care is about managing fatigue and preserving function. Our caregivers are trained in energy conservation principles (paced activity, rest scheduling, task batching), transfer techniques for asymmetric weakness, heat avoidance (especially in Winnipeg summers when Uhthoff's phenomenon can trigger temporary symptom worsening), and recognising the subtle signs of a relapse so it gets flagged to the MS Clinic early.
For clients on disease-modifying therapies (Ocrevus, Tysabri, Kesimpta, Mavenclad, oral DMTs), our RNs provide injection support where applicable, infusion support in coordination with the MS Clinic, and adverse event monitoring. We also support clients using intermittent self-catheterisation, spasticity management (Baclofen, Botox), and bladder/bowel protocols common in MS.
Flex care for flares
MS relapses often require dramatically more care for 1-4 weeks — then independence returns. Our scheduling model flexes hours up during flares (including 24/7 if needed) and back down as recovery progresses, without the friction of re-contracting each time.
Heat and Winnipeg summers
Winnipeg summers regularly hit 30°C+ with high humidity. For MS clients with heat sensitivity, we plan around it — early-morning or evening activities, cooling protocols (cool showers, wet scarves, AC compliance), and rescheduling therapy sessions during heat waves.
